Background

In the summer of 2017, the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, assumed patronage for the reconstruction of the Garrison Church in Potsdam. On 12th October 2018, an Academic Advisory Board under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Paul Nolte was constituted in order to provide scholarly support to this project, and to the foundation overseeing it. This committee consists of ten figures from academia, culture and politics. Their role is to offer expert advice to the foundation with respect to planning and implementing the reconstruction of the tower, and to establishing it as a place of remembrance and reconciliation.

The Foundation has outlined three principles to guide the project – "To Remember History – To Learn Responsibility – To Live Reconciliation". In its work, the Academic Advisory Board focuses on these three principles, both in their singularity and as mutually interdependent values. The Board aims to facilitate an attitude toward the project characterized by interdisciplinary and comparative reflection, offers expert advice to and addresses the questions of the Foundation, but remains independent in its judgements. The Board usually meets twice a year and organizes politically educational public events.

In her role as Managing Director, the historian Anke Silomon organizes the ongoing work of the Academic Advisory Board, links the Committee’s activities with the Potsdam Garrison Church Foundation’s Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, and takes the lead in organizing events and publications.
